Wallace “Wally” Loney, 92, of McCallsburg, passed away peacefully, surround by his loving family, on Friday, July 1, 2016.

Wally was born in Marshalltown on February 19, 1924, to Curtis and Lilly (Hamblin) Loney. He attended Marshalltown High School before serving in the US Navy Air Corps during World War II from 1941 to 1945.

Wally was married to Irene Boston for 29 years until she passed away in 1984. Wally married Marie (Wolfe) Caltvedt on January 28, 1989; they celebrated 27 years of marriage this year.
Wally worked at Rock Island Railroad for two years, then James Thompson Construction/Story Construction for 40 years as a warehouse supervisor; he retired in 1988. Wally also served the NESCO Community School District as a bus driver for 10 years, where he greatly enjoyed the company of the area’s youngest citizens.

Wally was well known statewide as the mayor of McCallsburg. He was first elected mayor in 1988 and went on to proudly serve for 26 years. Under his leadership, McCallsburg installed a new town-wide sewer, renovated the water system, and updated the technology for City Hall. He also proudly penned a monthly “Message from the Mayor” in the McCallsburg News. He worked diligently to keep McCallsburg “clean as a whistle” and took great pride in being the ambassador of the town. He was often celebrated in local- and statewide -media as the oldest and longest tenured mayor in Iowa.

Wally was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, McCallsburg Lion’s Club, McCallsburg American Legion Post 334, and the 50 Year Club at the local Masonic Lodge.

Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife, Marie; children Judy Barker, Clark (Deb) Wicks, Claudia (Peter Canalia) McCall, Donald Caltvedt, and Jacki (Ken) Meimann; grandchildren Kevin (Bethany) Wicks, Ashlee Wicks, Kyle Wicks, Brooke (Jim) Penders, Courtney (Aaron) Quinn, Travis (Holly) Meimann, McKenzie (Joe) Krauchten; great-grandchildren Thai, Zeek, Tess, Hank, Charlie, Austin, Ava, James, Zoey, Tyler, Hope, Mason, Abby, Rylee, and Kenner; step-sister Bernice Duncan; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Irene, his brothers Roger, Harvey, Curtis Jr., and Richard, and his sister, Nadine.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, McCallsburg. His life will be celebrated at a funeral service on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, 1:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kathy Sandmann officiating. Burial will follow at the Warren Township Cemetery, McCallsburg.

Thank you, Wally, for being such a caring and clever character throughout your 92 years of enjoying life. You brought great joy to so many who had the pleasure of knowing you. You taught us all about loving life and loving people. You betcha!
