John William Foley of Arvada, Colorado, formerly of Colo, Iowa, passed away, December 26, 2015. He was born January 24, 1942 in Nevada, Iowa, moving to Colo as a child and living there until recently relocating to Arvada. John worked for 36 years as a lab technician at the National Animal Disease Center providing significant contributions to valuable research during his tenure. He loved his hometown of Colo, Iowa, and served many years on the city council and as the mayor from 2004-2008. He was also a member of the Colo Telephone Company Board 1999-2010 , Board President of River Valley Credit Union in 1983, John was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he was known around Colo as Mr. Fixit and enjoyed helping people keep their homes in good condition. He also loved listening to Willie Nelson, National Public Radio, and enjoyed reading.
John will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rita (Fink) Foley of Arvada; children Kyle (Stephanie) Foley of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sheila (Marcus) Seitz of Arlington, Virginia, and Luke (Charmaine) Foley of Arvada, seven grandchildren Marisa, Kayla, Alexander, Christopher, Jack, Liam, and Tatum; two brothers Leonard (Patty) and Thomas (Ginger); and seven sisters, Mary Anne Bigelow, Louise Amenson, Patricia Olsson, Janice Cannon, Margaret (Steve) Westvold, Barbara (Brad) Fregger, and Teresa (Lauren) Olson. He was preceded in death by two children, Timothy and infant daughter Kelly; his parents, Michael and Mary Alice (Ford) Foley; two brothers, Charles and Edward; six brother-in-laws, Leroy Bigelow, Argyll Amenson, Stan Olsson, Roger Cannon, William Fink, and Robert Stokka; one nephew, James Olsson; and one great nephew, Traven Keigley.
Visitation will be held May 28, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo, Iowa. Memorial Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Colo Fire and Rescue or Colo Public Library.
