OBITUARY

Death of P. J. Guthrie

Patrick J. Guthrie, an old soldier and an old citizen of Nevada, died Tuesday evening a the home in this city of his daughter, Mrs. A. Bates*, and his funeral was conducted Thursday forenoon from the Catholic church by Father Nichols. Mr. Guthrie had been ill since Thanksgiving time, when he came up from the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown to visit his daughter here and to join in a family reunion that was suggested by the visit here of relatives from Colorado. At that time he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, from which he made partial recovery but his recovery was only partial, and the end has come as noted.

Mr. Guthrie was born in Ireland July 9, 1830 and died as stated at Nevada, Iowa, March 14, 1911, aged 80 years, 8 months and 5 days. He emigrated to Illinois in 1855 and from Rockford in that state he enlisted in 1862 in Company B of the 92d Illinois Mounted Infantry, with which command he served through the most of the great western campaigns of the civil war. Returning from the war he removed with his family to Story county, Iowa, and he lived in this county both at Nevada and Cambridge being much esteemed by many old and true friends. He leaves his wife and five grown children. Of the latter, Mrs. Bates, resides here; Mrs. Daniel Stephens arrived from Boynton, Oklahoma, about ten days ago, and Mrs. George Raine of Minneapolis arrived Thursday evening, after the funeral.
