The Maxwell Tribune, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, November 3, 1904, page 4, column 3: OBITUARY – Rev. F. J. Beetley was born in Warren county, PA, August 23, 1846, he moved with his parents to Illinois when he was nine years of age, where he resided until his twenty second year and then moved to Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Lucy Smith, June 28, 1870. He was converted in his sixteenth year and joined the United Brethren church in which he entered the ministry in 1879, and labored fifteen years in the Des Moines conference, four years being spent in school at Western College, of Toledo, Ia.
On account of failing health he retired from the ministry for one year, there being no United Brethren church near his home he united with the Methodist Protestant church, being anxious to work in the vineyard of his Master.
He labored in the Methodist Protestant church until last March when he resigned the Colfax charge; his health continued to fail until October 28th when he was called from labor to reward, being fifty-eight years, two months and five days old at the time of his death. He leaves a wife, three foster sons, one brother and two sisters to mourn his loss; his father, mother, two brothers and five sisters having preceded him to the haven of rest.
At the request of the deceased only a short funeral service was conducted at the home near this city Sunday afternoon, being in charge of Rev. A. Q. Gharrett, pastor of the Peoria City M. P. church, who made only a few remarks, also Rev. V. Urbino and Rev. Clay Bobbitt assisted. Rev. J. W. Robertson, of Streeter, Illinois, who has been assisting Rev. Gharrett in a meeting at Peoria City, was also present and offered prayer. Interment was made in the Peoria City cemetery.
Rev. Beetley was well known in and near Maxwell, having been pastor of the Peoria City circuit M. P. church for a year, and has since resided on a farm near this city. The sympathy of many friends will be extended to the bereaved family.
