From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Leland Harold Himan
April 3, 1935 - April 18, 2016

Leland Himan, a 56 year resident of Ames was born on April 3, 1935, to Harold and Elsie Schroeder-Himan on the family farm that bordered the town of Palmer, Iowa, was baptized and confirmed at Elfsborg Swedish Lutheran Church in rural Pocahontas County, and attended the Palmer Public Schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade, graduating in 1953.

In December of 1954, I enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, completed a two-year teacher education program in May of 1956, and finished additional hours in the spring of 1957. During the summers of 1956 and 1957 I joined a group of nineteen Iowa college students who were employed by the U.S. Forest Service at Brush Creek Ranger Station on the western slope of the Snowy Range near Laramie, Wyoming.

In November of 1957, I was drafted into the U.S. Army from Pocahontas County, received my basic training at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado, completed the second eight weeks of training in artillery at Fort Sill, near Lawton, Oklahoma, and served the remainder of the two-year obligation in Bad Kissingen, West Germany with the 92nd Artillery Battalion.

Following service, I again enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College for the fall semester of 1959. In December 1959, I submitted an application, was interviewed by representatives of the Ames Community Schools and was offered a position as sixth grade teacher, teaching opposite the two teaching principals, Dale Brentnall at Whittier and Bill Ellett at Crawford Elementary Schools effective February 4, 1960.

During a total of thirty-four and a half years in the Ames Community Schools, I served as a classroom teacher at Whittier, Crawford, and Sawyer Elementary Schools. The years in the classroom were followed by twenty-four years serving as an elementary principal in the district. Between 1960 and 1970, I married my wife Gertrude "Abbie"; we became the parents of two children, Mark & Sara; taught at Whittier, Crawford, and Sawyer, received a sabbatical leave for the 1968-1969 school year; and completed my B.S. and M.S. Degrees at Iowa State University. I then taught one additional year at Sawyer, before becoming a teaching principal at Beardshear Elementary School on July 1, 1970. During twenty-four years, in administration, I served as principal at Beardshear, Crawford, Whittier, Meeker, Wilson, Wilson-Beardshear, and Northwood Schools as the district was downsizing due to declining enrollments. Twenty-one of those twenty-four and a half years in education were devoted to students and staff of Crawford Elementary School.

I retired from the Ames Community Schools in 1994; began a second, but shorter career, as a real estate agent in Ames , and retired for a second time in 2005.

Leland is survived by: his wife Gertrude "Abbie", son Mark, daughter Sara(Mark); Grandkids Anna and Lauren Himan; Logan, Paige and Erin Bathie.
