Pearl (Helmi) Emilia Kauppila (Meier) was born on June 11, 1919 to Matt and Fanni (Paavola) Kauppila in Finlayson, Minn. In 1939, Pearl married Melvin Buckley in Charles City, Iowa. Together they had three children: Betty, Gene and James. After their divorce in 1952, Pearl tried on several different career paths including sales, nursing, and a restaurateur. It was at her restaurant in Charles City, The Point Cafe, where she met her second husband, Alvin Meier. They married May of 1961 and moved to Ames. In October of 1962, their son, Gilbert, was born. In early 1963, Alvin was in a car accident which led to his long-term hospitalization at the VA Hospital in Knoxville. Pearl remained a faithful wife to Alvin and she raised their son on her own.

Pearl started attending Ascension Lutheran Church in 1965 as a charter member. She was active in the church, passionate in her love for Jesus, and her love for people. Pearl believed in ministering to people in a practical way, as well as being a steadfast prayer warrior.

Pearl's love for America drew her into politics. She wrote many articles for the local paper, and she was involved at the state level, writing state officials often. She was active in her support of the Republican Party, and was recognized even at the national level.

Pearl passed away at 96 years of age on February 27, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Pearl is survived by her sister, Elsie Ahonen; her brother, Wilho Michaelson; her sons, Gene Buckley of Ames, James Buckley of Fla., and Gilbert (Diana) Meier of Boone; her son-in-law, Warren Scott of Mt. Pleasant; her grandchildren, Deborah Scott of Ohio, Sara Scott of Eugene, Ore., Mike Buckley of Nev., Kirk Buckley of Nev., Michael Meier of Ames and Christy (Marcus) Ancell of Cedar Falls; and her great-granddaughter, Eleanor Ancell.
