Richard Eugene Novak was born July 31, 1932 to Frank and Frances (Whitman) Novak in Rockford Ill. Dick served in the U.S. Air Force from January of 1953 to December of 1956. On August 21, 1957, Dick was united in marriage to Mary Ball in Ames. Dick served two terms as the mayor of Slater from 1964 to 1968 and was very instrumental in the creation of Grimm Park and recruiting the establishment of Slater's current clinic. He was a member of St Cecilia Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 260 in Slater. Dick was the owner/operator of Novak Masonry and his cement tenders were known as mud poopies. He was a fan of the Slater Night Hawks, the St. Louis Cardinals and all Iowa State University sports. Dick enjoyed fishing and golf, but his favorite thing to do was to be with his children and grandchildren.

Dick passed away at 83 years of age on January 23, 2016 at his home in Ames.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Novak of Ames; his daughters, Barbara (Jeffrey) Laas and Jill (Douglas) Denson; his sons, Christopher (Renee) Novak, Dominic (Bridget) Novak, David (Connie) Novak and Richard (Barbara) Novak, Jr.; seventeen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers; and one sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister.

His body will be cremated after the Mass with burial of the cremated remains at a later date.
