From Nevada Representative September 10, 1890
Zearing.
....It is with a feeling of sadness we record the death of E. A. Oakes, better known as Lef Oaks, at his home in Grand Island, Neb., on Tuesday, Sept. 2nd, 1890. The greater part of his life was spent on his father's farm in Illinois Grove, where he has a host of friends. For the last five or six years he had been traveling salesman for a whole sale hardware firm in Nebraska, which valued him very highly both as a salesman and a friend. A little more than a year ago he came to Iowa and married Miss Mary Carver o this place and took her to his home in Grand Island, where they resided until his death. We are glad to know that he was at peace with God and man, ready to meet his Maker. The remains were brought to Iowa for burial. Funeral services were held in the Evangelical church at this place on Thursday, Sept. 4th. The body was interred in the Illinois Grove cemetery. His young wife and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Eliphalet A. "Lef" Oakes was the son of Samuel X. Oakes and Sarah Jane Anderson.
