From Nevada Representative June 27, 1888

William Scott, only son of John H. and M. B. Scott of Roland, died last Wednesday afternoon, June 20, 1888. His death resulted from the accidental discharge of a revolver he was carrying in a side coat pocket while returning from the home of his parents to the residence of J. P. Harnden for whom he had been at work since early in the spring. The wound was an ugly one passing almost entirely through the body and badly rupturing one lung. The nature of the injury together with the fact that the unfortunate young man lay without care from late Sunday evening till he was found Monday noon, made his recovery very doubtful from the first. For several days after the sad event, however, there was dome hope and everything that medical skill and loving care could suggest was done to carry him through, but without avail. Will Scott was 22 years old, having been born at Van Wert, Ohio, in 1866. He came when a mere child with his parents to Nevada passed through the successive grades of our school to the grammar grade. He also attended school two of three winters at Roland after his parents moved to that place. He was industrious and inclined to save his earnings; kind hearted--making no enemies and earning hosts of friends. His funeral was quite largely attended by friends from both Roland and Nevada, the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Bowman at the grave in our attractive cemetery, Friday forenoon. The bereavement is a very sad one, and Mr. Scott and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Mr. Scott and family are sincerely grateful for the kindly assistance and sympathy extended to them by neighbors and friends in this their day of sorrow.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: William Scott was the son of John Hughes Scott and Minerva Brown.
