Ames Youth Found Dead Of Gunshot
An 18-year old Ames youth, Larry Myers, was found dead about 3 a.m. Sunday in his car two miles east and one-fourth miles south of Roland on county Road H.
Cause of death was attributed to a bullet wound in the head, according to county Sheriff Ivan Shalley. A 23 caliber automatic pistol was the death weapon, Shalley said.
Ringdahl said he is "not discounting the possibility the youth might have been reloading the pistol," or that "the death was accidental."
Shalley said the youth apparently shot himself as the car sped along the county black top road. The car went into the ditch, jumped across a driveway leading to a field and tore down a length of fence, ending right side up.
The car was driven away with only slight damage.
Myers was free on bond following the filing of charges of assault and battery by his wife in Municipal Court in Ames about a week ago.
Sheriff Shalley said he was called to the Ames youth's apartment about 11 p.m. Saturday to investigate a call from Myers' wife that he was fighting with her brother.
The sheriff said upon arrival the two men were merely talking and denied any fighting had occurred. The brother said he had merely come to Ames to see if he could reconcile Myers and his sister.
Mrs. Myers* is expecting a child. She reportedly had been living with her parents in Zearing.
Sheriff Shalley said no inquest is planned. He did say officials will try to determine to whom the pistol belonged. Myers reportedly had tried to borrow a pistol from an Ames man on the night of the tragedy but was unable to obtain one.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. Myers" was Ilo Jean Hoberland.
