Ila Marie Barrett, 92, of Maxwell, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Madrid Home. Visitation will be 1 -3 pm Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Private burial will be at the Maxwell Cemetery at a later date.

Ila Marie (Brown) Barrett was born in Maxwell on October 5, 1923, to Richard Z Brown and Hattie “Pet” (Beal) Brown. She graduated from Maxwell High School and attended Central College in Pella. On August 10, 1943, she married Wilbur V. Barrett. Mrs. Barrett babysat and worked at a discount store in Ames. She was employed for several years at Cooper’s Funeral Home and at the Bacon Funeral Home.

She was given “Life Membership” to the Maxwell American Legion Auxiliary where she was a very active member for many years. She served as State Vice President, District President, Story County President, and other offices of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a counselor at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and Junior Camp. She also belonged to the Maxwell United Methodist Church, Monday Study Club; Past President’s Parley of Ames; The Order of the Eastern Star, and a card club. Ila was involved in Volunteer work.

Mrs. Barrett is survived by her son Richard Barrett of Ankeny; two grandsons: Dirk (Jaime) Barrett of Ankeny, Joshua (Lisa) Barrett of Maxwell; five great- grandchildren: Jena Marie Barrett and Jordan A. Barrett of Maxwell; Sam Reiter and Sean Barrett of Ankeny, McKenna Klein of Elk River, Minnesota; daughter-in-law: Carol Barrett of Fontanelle; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Barrett, and her parents, Dick and Pet Brown.

Memorial contributions in Ila’s honor may be made to the Iowa Foundation of the American Legion Fund or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

The Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
