ROLAND ROCKETS
Mrs. Martha Simmons*, mother of Sam Simmons*, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Johnson, in McCallsburg last Thursday from the infirities of old age. For nearly fifty years she had lived for most of the time in this township, being classed with early settlers. Her husband died several years ago since which time her home had been in Roland. Her oldest son Jacob, lives on an island in the Pacific ocean off the west coast of the state of Washington. One son, Henry, died in that state a few years ago. Her other son, Sam, is a resident of Roland, while the daughter, Mrs Johnson, now lives in McCallsburg. The funeral was held at Bergen's church Saturday afternoon, Rev. Smedal preaching the sermon. Thus passes away one more of Howard's pioneer citizens whose ranks are now reduced to limited few.
*SUMBITTER'S NOTE: Most references to this family show the last name is "Simmonson" or "Simonson." When her daughter married Oscar Johnson, she is listed as Betsy Simonson and lists her parents as Ben Simonson and Mathey Halverson.
