Frederick Morris Johnson 72, of Ames, Iowa passed away July 9, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Fred was born January 19, 1943 in Elmira, New York to Franklin and Alma (Ruffner) Johnson. Fred grew up and graduated from high school in the Buffalo, New York area. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Iowa Wesleyan College and a Master's degree in Education from Drake University. Fred had a long, successful and enjoyable career teaching in both Illinois and Iowa schools.

Later, Fred served as a consultant for the Talented and Gifted program with the Area Education Association and as an advisor at Iowa State University for student teachers. He also delighted in his time as a tutor for young people and working at the Explore Store.

Fred enjoyed a wide variety of music and was fascinated with old time radio. At Iowa Wesleyan University he had a radio show called "Johnson's Wax"! In Ames, Fred was a valued volunteer at KHOI FM Community Radio.

Fred loved to talk to everyone he met, whether it was at his favorite coffee shop, sharing with friends at Beyond Welfare, PFLAG, or in one of his many other community activities.

Fred was a member of Unity Church of Ames. He served on the Board, sang in the choir, and was active in Unity Readers' Theater and Unity Friends in Deed.

Fred is survived by his sister Teri (William) Beery of Wooster, Ohio; two nephews, a niece and their families and his beloved companion cats Katie and Larry.

Family and friends thank the caring and competent staffs at Riverside South, Israel Family Hospice House, Mary Greeley Medical Center, University of Iowa Hospitals, Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines and all the associated people who served him.

There will be a visitation at Stevens Memorial Chapel on Monday July 13 from
5 to 7 pm , with a memorial prayer service at 6 pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Unity Church of Ames, 9th & Kellogg, on Saturday July 25, 11:00 am.

Memorials may be directed to the Ames Animal Shelter, Unity Church of Ames, or a charity of your choice.
