Williams “Bill” H. Tharrington 79, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015, of Brain Cancer, surrounded by his family at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.

Bill was born January 13, 1936, to Marvin Speed and Eva “Harper” Tharrington in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Bill Graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1954. He enlisted and served in United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and Field Crop Sciences in 1961 from North Carolina State University. On June 29, 1958, Bill was united in marriage with the love of his life, Jeannette Dixon. After graduating, the couple moved to New Brunswick, NJ, where Bill attended Rutgers University for graduate studies in Agricultural Chemical Weed Research. In 1965, the couple came to Ames, Iowa where Bill was the General Manager of a Research Farm for Geigy Corporation. Over the next 25 plus years, Bill dedicated his career to Ag Research with various Chemical Companies. This journey took the family, which now included a son to many stops along the way including Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois. Then in 1988 the couple returned to Iowa, where Bill and Jeanette built Professional Research Organization in Colo, Iowa. The family built their current home in Nevada at this time, and has been a part of the community since. Bill retired from the USDA in 1999, but started a new career in 1994 working part time at Target, where he found a tremendous amount of joy. He was with Target for 21 years and he dearly loved every minute, and was still currently employed there.

Bill was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, Iowa, Nevada Masonic Lodge, and Bill was also a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite. Bill was an avid reader and could often be found at the Nevada Public Library. His love of reading was life long, and a book always close by. Bill loved woodcarving, Sudoku puzzles, gardening, music, bird watching, playing bridge, cribbage and enjoying the fruits of his efforts on their property.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jeannette; of 57 years; his son and daughter-in-law: Williams “Bill” and Chanhom “Baccam” Tharrington; his sister: Tempe Alston of Battleboro, North Carolina; one niece Joann Alston; and one nephew: Larry Alston.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Duke Tharrington and his brother-in-law: Johnny Alston.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 8, 2015, from 4-7 PM at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, Iowa. Masonic Services and Rites will follow visitation at 7:00 PM.

Memorial Services will be Thursday, July 9, 2015, at 10:30 AM at Nevada Central Presbyterian Church. Those wishing to pay special tribute to Bill are welcome to wear red & khaki to honor the passing of “Mr. Target” Target of Ames Store 1170.

Inurnment with military honors will be at Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Central Presbyterian Church or the Nevada Masonic Lodge Scholarship Fund.
