Lynda D Brown, (December 23, 1936 - June 1, 2015)

Lynda D Brown, a former resident of Ames, IA, passed away after extended illness on June 1, 2015, in Burke, VA, surrounded by her family and friends. A service was held on June 3, 2015, at her daughter's home in Springfield, VA.

Lynda was a native of Big Stone Gap, VA and was the daughter of Nell Lile and Hiram C. Draper. She was born on December 23, 1936. Her sister, Jane Draper Stone, still resides in Big Stone Gap. Lynda graduated from Madison College with a degree in Biology in 1959 and worked much of her career as a Research Lab Technician. She married George G Brown of Richmond in Big Stone Gap on December 27, 1961 and they lived in Charlottesville, VA, Tallahassee, FL, and Miami, FL, before moving to Ames, Iowa, in 1967 where they resided for thirty-four years. This was a happy time where Lynda enjoyed her family, raised her children and made friends, many of which were from the "Yuma Bunch" and the "Ya-Ya's."

She enjoyed Iowa State University activities, particularly student plays, tailgates and basketball and worked various jobs with the University including lab tech positions in Plant Pathology, State of Iowa and with her husband George in the Department of Zoology and Genetics. She was dedicated to her work and was instrumental in developing cryopreservation procedures for trout, walleye, and paddlefish.

In 2001, they moved to Big Stone Gap for several years to be closer to family before moving to Burke, VA in 2014. Lynda and George have two children, Laura Elaine, and Gordon, born in 1964 and 1967, respectively. Laura married Robert Mann of Florida in 1993 and they have two children, Elizabeth Crist and Emily Laurel, and live in Springfield, VA. Gordon married Juli Boeyink from Sioux Center, IA in 1997 and they have two children, Olivia Rose and Cael Hampton, and live in Cary, North Carolina. Lynda's nephew, Todd A. Stone, son of Jane and Dickey Stone, lives in Bloomington, IN with his wife, Lara and their son, Kristian.

Lynda loved to talk and visit with her grandchildren and sister, was fond of reading, watching TV serials, and keeping up with her friends. She was most happy when with family and grandchildren and was in good mental health. Her humor and wit was enjoyed by all. No memorial is established, but contributions to Hospice would be gratifying for all.
