Mary Jane (Schalekamp) Van Marel was born December 22, 1932 to William and Grace (Reinders) Schalekamp in Orange City, Iowa. On August 20, 1955, Mary was united in marriage to Russell Dean Van Marel, who preceded her in death at Stratford, Iowa on March 5, 1971.

Mary received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Home Economics from Iowa State University in 1955 and 1975 respectively. She spent her career teaching in the Stratford, South Hamilton and Ames community school districts. Mary was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Ames.

Mary passed away on June 15, 2015 at 82 years of age.

Mary is survived by her children, Debra (Chandler) Thomas, of Lakeville, MN, Steven (Denise) Van Marel, of Ames and Ross (Renee) Van Marel, of Ames; seven grandchildren, Garth (Mindy) Thomas, Katy (Matt) Spitzner, Grant Thomas, Lora (Rob) Siebert, Sara Van Marel, Rylie Van Marel and Reid Van Marel; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Myrna Kreykes and her two daughters, Jennifer Weyman and Audra Duster and their families.

Blessed be her memory.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Ames.
