Obituary for Marvin R. Snyder

Marvin Roscoe Snyder, 96, of Huxley, formerly of Ames, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Marvin was born in Collins, Iowa on April 13, 1919, the son of Amos and Irene (Bates) Snyder. He graduated from Collins High School in 1937. After graduation, Marvin joined the Navy. While on shore leave in California, he met Dorothy Mae Old. They were married on January 2, 1943, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dorothy preceded Marvin in death in 2005. After serving his country and surviving World War II and the Korean Conflict, he retired after twenty years as a Chief Engineman from the Navy and returned to his home state of Iowa where he farmed for several years. When the National Animal Disease Laboratory (NADL) was built in 1961, he was one of the first hires, and retired after 13 years. Marvin owned and operated Snyder’s Auto Repair in Nevada and enjoyed hunting and fishing, ISU Women’s Basketball and the Kansas City Royals. He loved working on his two 1951 Hudson convertibles. Marvin was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the Collins VFW.

Marvin is survived by his daughter: Marilyn (Ron) Carr of Boone, Iowa; a son, Roger (Pamela) Snyder of Huxley, Iowa; two grandchildren: Linda (Don) Mahoney of Des Moines, Iowa, Pamela (Steve) Shafer of Alabama; several great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a special niece: Pamela K. Snyder of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be Noon until 1:00 PM Monday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell, Iowa.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be at 1:15 PM Monday at Evergreen Cemetery at Collins, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ducks Unlimited.
