Mary Ann Lawler, 97, passed away after a long, good life on February 25, 2015. She was tragically preceded in death on February 24 by her daughter Jane (Vern) Stalzer. A combined funeral service for Mary Ann and Jane will be held at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Mary Ann will be interred at St. James Cemetery in Colo. The dates of the services for Mary Ann are pending and will be available on the website of Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing, Iowa.
Mary Ann was born March 8, 1917, in Maxwell, Iowa, to Clyde & Mildred (Bennethum) Hopper. She graduated from Milford Consolidated School, and during WW II, she worked in Ankeny (filling bullets with gun powder) and at Optical Glass in California, which were her contributions to the war effort. On November 10, 1945, she married Verle Lawrence Lawler after he had finished his military service. She lived and raised her family on a farm in Union, lowa, until moving in 1974 to Colo, Iowa. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She loved to cook, especially baking homemade bread. Throughout her life, Mary Ann was dedicated to canning and freezing fruits and vegetables out of her gardens. She also made numerous quilts and traveled whenever possible. Those who knew Mary Ann would many times receive surprise gifts of fresh made bread or caramels. She donated many quilts to area hospitals to comfort children involved in emergencies.
Those left to remember Mary Ann include six children, Betty (Jeff) Jegenyes, Rose Mary Hicks, Frank (Joyce) Lawler, Karen Riskedahl, Darlene (Bill Lewis) and Clyde Lawler. In addition, thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, three brothers, Richard Hopper, Eldon (Ethel) Hopper, Don Hopper and one sister, Helen Fraser, mourn her passing. Mary Ann is preceded in death by her daughter Jane; son-in-law, Ed Hicks, her parents; Verle; sister, Dorothy Slaughter; sister-in-law, Marge Hopper; and brother-in-law, Frances Fraser.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Villa Del Sol Care Facility in Marshalltown,Ia who provided excellent care for Mary Ann during the last six years of her life, and Iowa River Hospice, who assisted during her last days. A special thanks also goes to Mary Ann’s friends in Colo, who have been so important in her life. Remembrance and thanks goes to Jane, who was the cornerstone of Mary Ann’s care in recent years.
Visitation is Tuesday, March 3, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Saint Henry's Catholic Church 221 Olive St Marshalltown Ia with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Henry's Catholic Church.
Interment - Saint James Catholic Cemetery, Colo, IowaFredregill Funeral Home in Zearing,Iowa has been entrusted with the care of Mary Ann and her family.
