Lois Marjorie (Linn) Vickre was born on July 2, 1916, the second child of seven children, to Henry and Amy (Amundson) Linn. She was born on a farm. She moved with her parents in 1920 to the farm of her father’s uncle, Matt Hermanson, near Sherman, South Dakota. Here she began attending rural school. In 1923, she, a sister, Kernie and now a baby brother, Howard, born in Dakoata, moved to the farm belonging to grandparents Lewis and Martha Amundson, who then retired to Clear Lake, Iowa. Then in 1925, her parents purchased a farm southeast of Radcliffe and another move ensued.

Lois was baptized by Rev. J.J. Lee on August 18, 1916 and was confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Radcliffe in 1930. Her membership remained there until 1944 when she transferred her membership to Zion Lutheran Church, rural Radcliffe.

After attending rural schools, she attended the Radcliffe High School, graduating in 1934, with a Normal Training Teacher’s Certificate. She received a scholarship to Waldorf College and attended one year. Here, she worked for her board and room at the home of the high school superintendent.

That fall she began teaching rural school at Concord #4 in Hardin County for two years, followed by four years in Hamilton County, one year at Scott Center and three years at Lincoln #8. For two summers she taught Vacation Bible School.

On December 26, 1940, she married Arnold Vickre of Radcliffe, Iowa at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union one child, Ronald Kent Vickre was born on October 22, 1942. They moved to the Vickre farm in 1946 and farmed until 1971 when they retired to Story City.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Starting in 1966, she began teaching second grade at Jewell Community Schools. In 1975, after suffering a heart attack, she retired.
She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association (NEA). She has spent many years as a member of Sons of Norway, has been a president of the WELCA, a Sunday School teacher and continued her membership at Zion Lutheran Church.
