From Fredergill Family Funeral Home obituary, Collins and Zearing, Story County, Iowa:

Benny J. Caulkins, age 92 of Collins, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at his home in rural Collins.

Benny was born on August 5, 1922, in Knoxville, Iowa to Oce and Catherine (Mott) Caulkins. He attended Country School in the Scotch Ridge area. The family moved to a farm near Beech, Iowa, where Benny graduated from Beech High School in 1940. He played on the Beech High School Boys Basketball team who won the Warren County Championship in 1939. In the fall of 1942, the family moved to the farm outside of Collins and that's where he resided until his passing. He was a member of the Collins Christian Church, a 50 year Mason, 50 year Eastern Star and belonged to the Lion's Club. He served on the Collins School Board and the Story County Beef Board. Benny loved the farm, where he fed beef cattle for over 40 years. He took great pride in the care of the homestead and being a good steward of the land. He stayed interested in all of the Collins Community activities and loved being in the small, caring community. His family was so precious to him and spending time with them was such a joy.

Benny is survived by his wife Patricia (Fertig) Caulkins of 67 years; a daughter, Rita (Steve) Carroll of Altoona; a son, Ken (Jean) Caulkins of Collins; five grandchildren; Ryan (Stacy) Carroll of Urbandale, Eric (Kallie) Carroll of Shawnee, Kansas, Megan (Joel) Guthrie of Altoona, Dani (Ben) Dau of Waverly, Iowa and Alex Caulkins of Des Moines; eight great grandchildren, Addison, Shane, and Liam Carroll, Quentin Carroll, Karrigen, Jamesyn and Case Guthrie and Emory Dau; and two sisters, Helen (Curly) Eason and Doris Dickel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Darel and Wilma Caulkins; niece, Genie Eason, brothers-in-law, Jack Fertig and Al Dickel and his parents-in-law, Hugh and Virginia Fertig.

He treasured his many friends for all the caring and support they gave him, which the family greatly appreciates. Benny's wish was for a private prayer and committal service. From 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014, there will be a gathering of family and friends for a celebration of life, luncheon and fellowship at the Collins Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Collins Christian Church or to one's favorite charity on behalf of Benny Caulkins.
