Bernadine Alegra Schaefer
August 26, 1913 - November 6, 2014Bernadine A. Schaefer, 101 of Zearing passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the Zearing Health Care Center. Bernadine Dakins Schaefer went peacefully to the Lord on November 6, 2014. She was born at her parents' farm (Manley and Bethany), while living at the same farm at the age of 101.
Bernadine graduated from Zearing High School in 1930 and began her 40+ year teaching career at the same school in 1935. She married Charles, “Chuck” Schaefer in 1940. Chuck was employed in sales with Standard Oil and he and Bernadine moved several times within Iowa as the job required. Bernadine continued to teach in New Hampton, Fort Dodge, Mason City and Waterloo, mostly in middle school. After Chuck passed away in 1981, Bernadine began to spend more time in Zearing and moved back to live full time with her sister Annis in 1993. She was still living at the "family farm" up until the time of her death with a lot of wonderful help from family and friends. Bernadine was a talented artist. She played the piano and excelled at painting and a variety of arts and crafts. She continued with her art until the very end.
She was predeceased by her husband, Chuck, and brothers and sisters: Okal Mantz, DeLos Dakins, Annis Brouhard, Sam Dakins, Donald Dakins, and niece and nephew Kay Dakins Powell and Dan Dakins. She will be greatly missed by nephews, Jim Dakins, Craig Dakins and Mark Dakins and nieces Susan Dakins James and Maxine Dakins, along with many other family members and friends.
Memorials may go to the Security State Bank "Dakins Lake Bernadine Schaefer Memorial Fund" or to a charity of your choice.
