Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Henry L. Hayes
May 20, 1925 - October 30, 2014
Henry Lafayette Hayes was born May 20, 1925 to Henry Clayton and Mildred Florence (Lang) Hayes in Hamburg, Iowa. He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1943 and entered that same year the United States Marine Corp, which was during WWII. Henry and Dorothy Tate were married December 14, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska. After his discharge in 1946, they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa where he worked for a car dealership. This is when Henry learned and developed his welding skills. Henry started in the maintenance shop with the Iowa Highway Commission in 1952 and was later transferred to the materials department where he applied his talented welding skills. In 1962 Henry applied for a transfer from Shenandoah to Ames and has been in Ames ever since the move July 4, 1962. In 1987 he retired from full time work at the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) but continued to teach welding three days a month until he was 80 years old (2005). Even though his job was welding he enjoyed welding as a hobby and had a shop named Henry's Welding. After an accident that crushed his pelvis in 1975, Henry took up needlepoint in order to keep busy and be creative. He thoroughly enjoyed helping people. Henry was a member of First Christian Church in Ames and the Ames American Legion.

Henry passed away at 89 years of age on October 30, 2014 at Riverside North in Ames.

Henry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hayes, of Ames; his children, Sheri (Larry) Olson, of Ames, Henry S. Hayes, of Ames; Randy (Margie John) Hayes, of Roseville, California and Teri (Van) Villwock, of Ames; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ruth Hein and Neola Doty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to First Christian Church, 611 Clark, Ames, Iowa 50010.

Burial will take place at a later date.
