Elizabeth Frances Lewis Coulter
Dec. 22, 1903-June 2, 1998

Elizabeth Frances Lewis Coulter, 94, Ames, died of heart failure Tuesday at Northcrest Retirement Community. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at United Church of Christ-Congregational, with the Rev. Stephen McDuff officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines.

Elizabeth Frances Lewis Coulter was born in Clive, the daughter of James Randolph and AnnaBelle (Strathern) Lewis. On June 17, 1934, she married Frank Marion Coulter in Des Moines. She was a long-time teacher at Welch Junior High School and retired in 1969. After her retirement, she was instrumental in organizing the Ames Senior Citizens Center, serving as the first director until 1986. She then worked in the women's department at Target until December 1995. Mrs. Coulter was a long-time member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational; the Inter-Church Council of Church Women of Ames; Laura Chapter No. 115, Order of the Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron; Judea Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem, having served as Worth High Priestess; Alpha Delta Kappa; Chapter O, TTT; Ames Women's Club; and the Ames Area Coordinating Committee for Senior Citizens. Her other interests included sewing, reading, gardening and family history. Her great-grandfather, John Lewis, was the original settler of land in Polk County on the present site of Living History Farms.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Anne Marshall of Ames, and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 8, 1944, two sisters and a brother.

Visitation is Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home.
