Richard Raymond Pfantz, 88, of State Center, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2014, at the State Center Nursing and Rehab Center with several family members present.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St Paul Lutheran Church in State Center with Pastor Joan Swander officiating. Richard Raymond Pfantz was born May 16, 1926, to Raymond and Grace (Meservey) Pfantz of rural State Center. He grew up on "the farm" north of State Center surrounded by a close family of aunts, uncles and cousins. In 1944 he was drafted into military service while yet a senior in high school. He served as a communications specialist throughout the Pacific during World War II. On November 16, 1947, Richard married Dora Jean Rittierodt at St Paul Lutheran Church in State Center. The family farmed for many years in the State Center and Colo areas until 1965. The family then moved to the Colo community where Richard worked for Farren Implement and eventually for J. I. Case affiliates in Nevada and Boone. He was active in his community by serving on the Colo City Council, the Colo Telephone Board, and the Colo Volunteer Fire Dept and also as Boy Scout Cubmaster. Richard was also a faithful and active member of St Paul Lutheran Church throughout his life having also served on church council.

Richard was known as "Richard" and "Rich" and "Dick," but his favorite nicknames were "Grandpa" and "Great-Grandpa." He was always happiest when helping his sons with various re-modeling projects and/or watching over his "grand" and "great-grand" children.

Left to cherish Richard's memory are his wife of 66 years, Dora Jean of State Center; two sons, Larry (Ann) Pfantz of Marshalltown and Rod (Jeanine) Pfantz of Nevada; his grandchildren, Jenni (Amy Hedblom) Pfantz of Mingo, Jeff (Jennifer) Pfantz of Marshalltown, Jamie Pfantz of Ames, Rodney Pfantz of Nevada and Kelsi (Billy) Black of Durand, WI. He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren Kaylem, Emma, Peyton, Nicholas, Wyatt and expected baby Black. Also surviving are sisters Pauline (Leonard) Beck and Carol (Richard) Stowell and brother Robert (Gloria) Pfantz.

In death Richard has rejoined his son Dennis, parents Raymond and Grace, step-mother Rivola, and half-sister LaVoy.

Memorials for Richard may be directed to his family or the Contribution Fund at the State Center Nursing and Rehab Center in State Center, IA.
