Donald Murray Roberts, 90, of Ames passed away peacefully Tuesday July 15, 2014, at Mary Greeley Memorial Hospital.
Donald was born November 6, 1923 to Lemual and Evelyn Roberts in Calgary Alberta, Canada, the first of two children.
Don Attended the University of Alberta and later Purdue University where he received his Master's Degree and Ph.D in Nuclear Physics.
Don was married to Joanne McDanel on June 26, 1954. After working with Canada Westinghouse and Babcock & Wilcox in the Nuclear Power field, he moved to Ames, Iowa and took a teaching position at ISU where he served as a full professor for 28 years. Much loved by his students, he was known for bringing heart and humor to the discipline of nuclear physics.
Don was a very active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames where he served as president and in many other leadership roles. In 2013, he was named the first honorary lifetime member. He was active in Kiwanis, ACTORS and Toastmasters International. He loved travel, poetry, photography, and all manner of intellectual pursuit.
Don is survived by his sister, Marion Whitney of Edmonton Alberta, Canada, his three children, Jennifer Roberts of Melbourne, Florida, David (Sonia) Roberts of Pickens South Carolina and Peter (Kim Wilson) Roberts of Eagle, Idaho, granddaughter Emily (Kyle Lane) Roberts, nephews Stephen, David, Arthur, Michael, and Eoin Whitney.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday July 19 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames 1015 N. Hyland Ave, Ames, IA 50014.Memorial contributions may be directed to Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames or Oxfam (www.oxfam.org).
