Wayne Larson Severson, M.D. was born March 7, 1921 to George James and Minnie Christina (Larson) Severson in Slater, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served on many boards. Wayne was educated in the Slater Public Schools, graduating from Slater High School in 1939.

In 1943, Wayne earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University, after which he entered the University of Iowa Medical School. He received his Medical Degree in 1946 and then served his internship at Broadlawns General Hospital in Des Moines until 1947. Wayne was inducted into the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in 1947 and served in a dispensary at Fort Ord, CA until 1948. Wayne then served a short residency at Flint, Michigan and returned to Slater in 1948 and began a general practice. He was called back into the service in 1955 and was a Captain in the Medical Corp in the United States Air Force stationed in Pittsburgh, PA. He then returned to Slater in 1956 and practiced medicine there until 1968.

Wayne was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Des Moines from 1968 to 1983, serving as Medical Director. He was appointed to the National Medical Advisory Board at Blue Cross/Blue Shield from 1976 to 1981 and served as President of the Board in 1980 and 1981. Wayne then worked as a medical consultant for the Iowa Foundation of Medical Care in Des Moines from 1983 to 1986.

Wayne is in the 57th Edition of "Who's Who in America Medicine and Healthcare. At 91, Wayne wrote and published the book, "The Life and Times of a Country Doctor."

Wayne was united in marriage to Dorathy Weeks in 1943. To this union were born three children, Allan, Richard and Brenda. In 1975, Wayne married Eyleen Bond, at which time he adopted Kelli. In 1990, Wayne married Maxine Sheldahl. Wayne's avocations included golf, bridge, numismatics, painting, travel and writing. He was a long time member of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

Wayne passed away July 3, 2014 at 93 years of age.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Ames; his sons, Allan (Shari) Severson, of Rancho Santa Fe, CA and Richard Severson, of Carlsbad, CA; his daughters, Brenda (Stephen) Thompson, of Sedro-Woolley, WA and Kelli (Rick) Maly, of San Diego, CA; three step-children, John (Martha) Sheldahl, of Polk City, Dr. Stephen (Kathy) Sheldahl, of Polk City and Suzanne (Dr. Neil) Calhoun, of Ames; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Severson, of Los Angeles, CA, Jason (Diane) Severson, of San Diego, CA, Molly (Ryan) Pond, of Bothell, WA, Taylor (Erin) Thompson, of Sedro-Woolley, WA and Mason Maly of San Diego, CA; nine step-grandchildren, Erin Sheldahl, Andrew Sheldahl, Erik Sheldahl, Julian Sheldahl, Joshua Sheldahl, Jessica Sheldahl, Joseph Sheldahl, Courtney Calhoun and Nicholas Calhoun; three great-grandchildren, Sadie, Colby and Marley; one niece, Mary Severson; and one nephew, Gary (Linda) Severson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eyleen; and four brothers, Dr. Gerrish Severson, Eugene Severson, Dr. Stanley Severson and George "Jim" Severson.

Memorials may be designated to the Slater Area Historical Association
