GERALD (GARY) MILTON MILLS

Gerald (Gary) Milton Mills, 57, of Nevada died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 1984 at Des Moines General Hospital in Des Moines, Ia.

Mills was born Nov. 31, 1926 in Nevada, Ia. to William Howard and Kathryn Marie Sutherland Mills. he was educated in the Nevada School and graduated with the Nevada High School Class of 1947.

On Sept. 4, 1948 he married Lola H. Herma in Story City. The couple has been life time residents of Nevada.

Mills was Nevada's first full time Fire Chief and he was fire instructor for Fire service Education at Iowa State University.

He was a member of the Nevada United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Nevada Masonic Lodge, a past president of International Society of Fire Service Instructors, and was the charter secretary of the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors. Mills was a member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Farm Safety Council.

Mills held offices in the Iowa Firemans Assoc.; CoChairman of Hall of Flame, Iows State Fair and the Ames American Legion.

he is survived by his wife, Lois of Nevada; two sons, Thomas M. Mills of Nevada and Robert B. Mills of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Ann (Mrs. Rick) Fink of Ankeny; one brother, William H. Mills of Stratford, Ia.; his mother Marie Mills of Nevada; his grandmother Mrs. Lena Irwin and three grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his father who died in 1968.

Masonic Services were held Thursday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, Military Rites were by the Ames American Legion.

Services will be Friday, Aug. 27, 1984 at 1 p.m. at the Nevada United Methodist Church with Rev. Gerald LaMotte officiating. Interment will be in the Nevada Cemetery, Nevada, Ia.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial fund is being established in his name for an Iowa Extension Service scholarship.
