Gracia Doreen (Peterson) Given, age 91, of Nevada, departed this life on Friday, June 13, 2014, at Windsor Manor in Nevada from
complications associated with Alzheimer's disease.

In accordance with her specific instructions, Doreen's cremains will be buried in the Peterson plot at Graceland Cemetery in Creston, Iowa, adjacent to the grave of her mother and the space allocated for Robert's cremains following his demise. Lutheran church doctrines will be observed but no public memorial service is intended at this time.

Doreen was born in Creston, Iowa, on May 24, 1923, the third and youngest child of John Hjalmar and Hallie (Youngberg) Peterson. Ever proud of her Swedish heritage, she was nicknamed "Pete" as a youngster and answered to that title for the rest of her life. After high school graduation she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she worked for Montgomery Ward and the State Motor Vehicle Division before joining Governor Knous's staff when she met her future husband.

Robert and Doreen were married June 12, 1949, in
Denver, then moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, after he accepted a job with the Iowa State Highway Commission. In future years new assignments dictated moves to Fairfield, Council Bluffs, Atlantic, and Ames. Sons Bill and John were born respectively in Ottumwa and Fairfield. Doreen relocated willingly, a devoted housewife, active homemaker, and contented participant in raising her family at their home in Nevada. During the 13-year span following Robert's retirement, Bob and Pete retained fondest memories of wintering down south in various locations, including three consecutive years at Biloxi, MS.
Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Peterson and sister Laverne Langmaid and their spouses.

Those surviving who will mourn her passing are her husband; two sons, Bill and John; two grandsons, David and Todd; plus relatives, many friends, and numerous acquaintances across the country. The family wishes to express its gratitude to residents in many communities where they've lived, including the wonderful staff at Windsor Manor for their support.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Doreen and her family.
