Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Elizabeth Smith was born in rural West Branch, Iowa to Ada Branson and Lee Millett on August 17, 1917. Elizabeth attended Springdale Schools and then graduated from William Penn College in 1939 with a degree in Home Economics. She started teaching at Marathon, Iowa, where she met her husband, Lael Smith. They married in 1943, moved to Ames and started a family.

Elizabeth was a birthright Quaker and demonstrated attributes like modesty, simplicity, thrift, charity and peaceful resolution to all conflict. Elizabeth was always focused on service and caring for others. She enjoyed being a member of Napier Methodist Church and loved being involved with its members and the rural community. She loved to bake and cook and especially loved serving her friends and family with delicious, nutritious meals from her garden and small acreage bounty. She participated in neighborhood groups, volunteered with People Place, Shelter Services, at schools and visiting dozens of elderly--staying active and involved up into her late 90s. After moving into town, she became a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church where she was active in volunteer roles and cherished being included in that congregation.

Elizabeth passed away at 96 years of age on May 16, 2014 at Northcrest Communities.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Bob) Nickel; her son, Steve (Marilyn) Smith; three grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ray (Clara) Millett and Roscoe (Helen) Millett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lael; her brother, Russell; her sisters, Genevieve and Golda; and her son, David.
