Velma Helen Groomes
July 29, 1912 to Dec. 12, 2000

Velma Helen Groomes, 88, of Huxley formerly of Nevada, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, of heart failure at Ballard Creek Community in Huxley, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

She was born July 29, 1912, in rural Ames to Dollie and Ida (Johnson) Jordan. She attended Shipley High School and married Glen F. Groomes on Feb. 20, 1930. They farmed by Fernald until 1956 when they moved to Nevada. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada and a past member of the Indian Creek Country Club, Don-Ce-Sar Dance Club and a former 4-H leader. She was a lifelong resident of Story County and enjoyed being with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (and Don) McLean of Ames; a son, Glen J. Groomes of Davenport, Neb.; three grandchildren, Denice Groomes of Cambridge, Steven Groomes of St. Clair, Mo., and Brent Groomes of Cedar Falls: 9 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and a sister Bonnie Adriance of Orlando, Fla.

Her parents; her husband on May 20, 1977; a daughter, Garnette Groomes on June 5, 1971; a grandson, Kevin Groomes on Nov. 2, 1991, all preceded her in death.

Visitation will be today (Thursday, Dec. 14) after 3 p.m. with the family present from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Nevada with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
