Duane Duit, 80, of Nevada, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Duane was born July 25, 1933, in Franklin County, Iowa to Aeilt Edward and Wyona Edena (Brower) Duit. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1951, and was united in marriage to Marjory Oliver on October 17, 1954 in Iowa Falls. Duane worked as a welder for Iowa Electric Light and Power in Iowa Falls from the 1950’s until 1974. While living in Iowa Falls, he served as a master sergeant with the Iowa National Guard for 20 years. Duane was a Cub Scout Master for a number of years and played on the Iowa Falls town softball team.

In 1974, Duane accepted the gas foreman’s position with Iowa Electric and moved the family to Nevada. There, Duane remained active as a Cub Scout leader and also coached Junior Babe baseball for several years.

Duane’s main passions in life were family, fishing and dancing. Over the years, he and the family spent vacations in Minnesota fishing. On most Saturday nights, Duane and Marge could be found dancing at Siloam Springs in Iowa Falls or the Moose Club in Ames. Duane retired from Iowa Electric in 1990 and continued to enjoy many fishing trips as well as watching sports on TV. He especially enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed creating many new culinary dishes in his kitchen and spending time with his family.

Duane is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjory; his daughters, Debra Duit Smith and Annette (Jeff) Jaehrling; his sons, Devin (Cindy) Duit and David Duit all of Nevada; his brothers, Virgil (Audrey) Duit of Slater and Calvin Duit of Missouri; his sisters, Norma (Keith) Burman of Aplington and Lavonna (Marlan) Meyer of Latimer; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carlene Harty; and a granddaughter, Ashlie Duit.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be used at their discretion at a later date.
