David John Bauman
February 26, 1944 - April 17, 2014

Dave was born on February 26, 1944 to John and Laura (Faiman) Bauman at St. Mary’s Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska. He was raised on a farm north of Richland, Nebraska and later moved into town. He attended District 41 and District 12 schools through 8th grade and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1962. Dave joined the Navy and served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1966. He married Sherry Elsner in 1974 and together they had a son, David Shawn Bauman. He was also an amazing father to Rick Elsner and Mike Elsner.

Growing up, Dave worked on the family farm. He also worked at the ammunition plant in Grand Island, NE and Spencer Foods in Schuyler before going to work for Stueve Construction in Algona, IA. He worked for Stueve for 42 years. He loved his job, the people that he worked with and being able to see “God’s Country” as he drove from job site to job site.

He married Jane “Stupka” Ihle on July 19, 2003. They made their home in Story City. Dave was an awesome step-dad to Brittany Hill and Austin Ihle.

Dave loved the outsdoors. He loved to hunt, garden, fish, and feed the squirrels and birds. He also liked to go to casinos. The family joked about the car turning into casinos on its own. Dave was a true Cornhusker fan. He was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church.

Dave was a wonderful grandpa. His face would light up as soon as one of his 11 grandchildren walked in the room. He liked sharing his love of the outdoors with them and he loved having them come over to the house to play.

David “Dave” John Bauman, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 surrounded by his family that loved him very much.

Left to cherish his memories are Jane, his wife; sons, David Shawn Bauman (Nicole) of Story City, Rick Elsner (Carrie) of Jewell, IA and Mike Elsner (Suzanne) of Dodgeville, WI; two step-children, Brittany Hill of Urbandale, IA and Austin Ihle of Story City; and his 11 grandkids, Elisabeth, Olivia, Ross, Abby, Ethan, Hayley, Cooper, Peyton, Kalen, Colbie and Kian. Dave is also survived by his 2 sisters, Dianne (Glenn) Moural of Schuyler, NE and Jolene (Stan) Pfeiffer of Omaha, NE and his father and mother in-law, Clarence and Marlence Stupka of Ankeny, IA. A host of in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins will miss Dave dearly.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents. Blessed be the memory of David John Bauman.

Memorials can be made to the family, St. Petri Lutheran Church, or Homeward Hospice.
