Professor Ted Nostwich, 88, of Ames, passed away April 1, 2014, at Green Hills Retirement Community surrounded by family members and his long-time friend and colleague, John McCully.
Theodore Daniel Nostwich was born September 14, 1925, to John and Amalia (Granitz) Nostwich in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Garfield High School, Akron; received a BA and MA from Ohio State University; and earned his PhD in English (American Literature) from the University of Texas in 1968. While at Ohio State, he was a member of the Beta Nu chapter of Sigma Nu. He taught English at Ferris Institute (now Ferris State University), Big Rapids, MI; University of Texas, Austin, TX; Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN; and Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, TX; before coming to Iowa State University in 1968. In 1996, he was a lecturer in American Literature at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He retired from Iowa State in 1998. He edited numerous works of Theodore Dreiser's, including "Heard in the Corridors," "Journalism Volume 1," "Newspaper Days," "Fulfillment and Other Tales," and "Dawn."
Ted married Ann Baker on March 21, 1953, in Columbus, OH, and they had five children. He was an aficionado of classical music, especially opera and the Cleveland Orchestra. He loved cinema and had encyclopedic knowledge of many 20th-century movies. He collected books, records, and stamps. He filled the backyard with tomato plants and was renowned for his French onion soup. He enjoyed travels with his wife and family through Europe, the American southwest, and the shores of the Great Lakes, where he collected agates to bring home and polish. He was a popular Bingo caller in the early days of the Hodge Avenue Fourth of July Celebration in Ames. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and a spirited follower of Ohio State Buckeye football.
Ted is survived and will be missed by his wife, Ann Nostwich, of Ames; three sons, Mark Nostwich, of Santa Fe, NM; Paul Nostwich, of Fort Bragg, CA; Michael Nostwich (Darla), of Ames; two daughters, Elisabeth Nostwich Lunaburg (David), of Ames; and Sarah ("Sallie") Nostwich, of Ames; five grandchildren, Samantha Nostwich, of Tulare, CA; Nicole Lozano (Timothy), of Boise, ID; Aaron Nostwich, of Ames; Joseph Lunaburg, of Ames; and Thomas Lunaburg, of Ames; three great-grand-daughters, Hailie Sarkissian, of Tulare, CA; and Jamie and Kayla Lozano, of Boise, ID; two great-nieces, Jennifer Nostwich Cogar, of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Elizabeth Nostwich Swaney, of Akron, OH; many dear friends, locally, nationally, and internationally; and Scamper, his ever-faithful blind dog.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Stephen Nostwich (Grace); his sister, Mildred Joan Nostwich; his sisters, Dorothy Sophia Nostwich and Ruby Loretta Nostwich who each died in infancy; and his nephews, Stephen John Nostwich and James H. Sloat.
