Carl "Shorty" Emanuel Johnson
March 1, 1912 to Dec. 13, 1998Carl "Shorty" Johnson, 86, of Nevada died Saturday Dec. 13 at Story County Long-Term Care in Nevada from a liver disorder.
Johnson was born March 1, 1912 in Nevada to Frederick C. and Anna Marie Johnson. He married Leah Pearl Rasmussen on June 1, 1935, in Marshalltown. Johnson was educated in Nevada. He enlisted in the Navy in 1929 and served on the USS Maryland as a machinist mate and discharged in 1935. Johnson later re-enlisted during World War II in 1942 and served as Chief Petty Officer on the USS Lakehurst and was discharged from active service in 1945. He was on the ship when the peace treaty was signed by President Harry S. Truman.
Johnson served as fire chief in Nevada for 20 years and retired from the fire department in 1977. Between 1977 and 1984, he drove a van for the Story County Council on Aging.
He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Nevada Masonic Lodge No. 99 AF & AM: The York Rite of Freemasonry of Ames, Joshua Chapter No. 127, Gebal Council no. 5 and American Commandery no. 69, Knight Templer, Nevada American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include two sisters, Marie Stoeffler of Winterset and Pauline Airhart of California, nine nephews, and eight nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leah, on Aug. 14, 1991; and a brother, Morris Johnson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 15 at Memorial Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
