Wendell Vinzant
July 29, 1921 to March 10, 2001

Wendell Vinzant, 79, of Nevada, died of cancer on Saturday, March 10, at Story County Long Term care, where he had been a resident for the past three years.

He was born July 29, 1921, in Mercer, Mo. to Hugh and Mabel (Manchester) Vinzant. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II and married Elaine Lemons on Aug. 4, 1940 in Princeton, Mo. He retired as a supervisor from GTE Telephone Company in 1983. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #48 and enjoyed golfing, fishing and gardening. He had been a resident of Nevada for the past 55 years.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine, of Nevada, three sons, Larry of Chandler, Ariz., Dick of Nevada and Randy of Des Moines; two daughters, Bonnie Dunahoo of Story City and Karen Nugent of San Jose, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and nin step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nadean Moore of Princeton, Mo.; and Aleane Shields of Fairview, Okla.

His parents; an infant daughter, Judy; and a brother, Benard Vinzant, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 14, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Burial followed in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Wendell's name at the Memorial Lutheran Church or the American Legion Post #48 in Nevada. Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, handled the arrangements.
