Brenda Carol Wightman was born July 30, 1964 to Allen and Carol (Neese) Wightman in Webster City, Iowa. She graduated from Ames High School in 1982 and then the nursing program at DMACC in 1986. Brenda pursued the nursing profession and worked as a registered nurse in Joliet, Illinois, Ames, and the last 23 years at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Brenda was a nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and was studying towards her BSN/MSN at Mount Mercy College. After suffering her recent heart attack due to complications of previous health issues, she received the most loving care from her team of co-workers in the CVICU. The team gave Brenda and her family the highest quality, professional and loving care possible. Brenda was greatly loved and respected by all, as is written in the following note:

"Brenda loved her job as a nurse. Brenda had many years of nursing experience, touching the lives of many people - those she worked with and those she cared for. Brenda truly loved caring for her patients, especially her cardiovascular patients. She took great pride in her work. Brenda was respected by all of her peers and was considered a strong resource for so many. Brenda had the kindest of hearts, always willing to help anyone and always going above and beyond the call of duty. As a nurse in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Brenda was an active member of the scheduling committee and took great pride and honor in orienting new staff members. Brenda never settled for less than her best. She was a great team member, hard working, compassionate, always wore a smile and had a very positive attitude. Brenda was a great nurse, teacher, mentor, co-worker and friend who will truly be missed and always remembered!"

Brenda passed away January 18, 2014 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at 49 years of age.

She is survived by her mother, Carol Wightman, of Ames; her brother, Brent (Laurie) Wightman and their children, Matt and Emily, of Waverly; several aunts; numerous cousins and friends; her CVICU family; and her dogs, Molly and Katie.

Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Allen, in 1991; her maternal grandparents, Muriel and Clifford Neese; her paternal grandparents, Stan and Effie Wightman; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family has requested no flowers. Memorials may be directed toward the family.
