Oct. 31, 1908 to Oct. 20, 2002

Ellen B. Hitchings, 93, of West Liberty, died Sunday, Oct. 20, following an extended illness at the home of her daughter in West Liberty.

She was born Oct. 31, 1908, in LeGrand to Aldus and Flora Adkins Hayes. She was a graduate of Marshalltown High School in 1928. On March 29, 1931, she married Wilbert Earl Hitchings in Eldora, and they farmed in Marshall and Story counties, retiring to move to West Liberty in 1977. She had also been employed with Scudder's in Nevada for many years. She was a member of the Nevada Christian Church and later the First Church United in West Liberty.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (and Ken) Ruegsegger of West Liberty and Marlys (and Keith) Allen of Penticton, British Columbia; one son, Gerald (and Meredith) Hitchings of Bremerton, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1989; and infant son, Merrill Duane; two brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services were held today (Oct. 24) at 10 a.m. at the First Church United in West Liberty. Burial was held at 2:30 today in the Nevada Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. The Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, handled arrangements.
