From Nevada Journal February 1937

In a collision of two trucks early Friday at Sylvis, Ill., Claude Appelgate, 30, of Nevada, was killed and Truman Jarman was critically injured and is in a hospital at Moline.

The Appelgate truck and one driven by Donald Carey of Omaha crashed on an icy cruve six miles east of Sylvis at 6 a.m. when it was still dark.

Clarence Adams, who was riding with Carey and Carey himself were less seriously injured, although neither had recovered himself sufficiently from shock to be questioned regarding the accident.

The two men had left late Thursday afternoon for Des Moines where they loaded a truck load of sheep at the Iowa Packing company for Swift and company's yards in Chicago. They left Des Moines about 8:00 o'clock that night and the accident occurred across the river near Moline before daylight Friday morning.

Appelgate who with his family lived at 1032 Lincoln Avenue is the son of Mr. and Mrs. V. I. Appelgate of south of town and leaves his wife, who was Miss Hazel Groseclose of Cambridge, and two little daughters, Luetta and Alberta, besides his parents, sisters; Mrs. Fay Purvis of Chicago, and Mrs. Merle Ferren of Colo, and Helen and a brother Donald at home.

Truman Jarmen, also married had been working with Applegate as an extra driver. His condition appears to be serious so far as word from the hospital is concerned, the report being that he suffered a slight skull fracture, amoung other injuries.
