John David Deines, 80, of Cedar Falls, went to meet his Heavenly Father on Monday, November 11, 2013 while a resident at Liebe Care Center in Greene. John was a participant with the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Research Program. Funeral Services of Christian Burial will be at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 10:30 AM with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 PM in the Chapel at Nazareth Lutheran Church.

John was born October 9, 1933 in Marshalltown; the son of Rev. Ishmael "I. J." and Dorothy MacAllister Deines. He attended Greene High School where he met the love of his life, Martha Grace Andrews, in 1948. They both graduated from Greene High School and Wartburg College. John later graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1959. John was united in marriage to Martha, daughter of Dr. William and Marjorie Flitton Andrews, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene on June 12, 1955.

In 1959, John was called as Pastor of Salem Lutheran Church in Correctionville and was ordained at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene. He served from 1961 until 1969 as Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport. The highlight of John's ministry was serving as the Campus Pastor at The Lutheran Student Center – University of Northern Iowa from 1969 until 1999, where he was affectionately referred to as "PD." During this time, PD had the privilege of ministering to many young adults and influencing their spiritual lives.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha, of Cedar Falls; his six children and twelve grandchildren, David and Julie Burns Deines, and their children, Kate and Emma of Cedar Park, TX; Dana and Samantha Pieters Deines, and their children, Alexa and Jared of Cedar Falls; Dawn Deines-Christensen and Keith Christensen, and their children, Chelsey and Lynsey of Decorah; Diedre and Doug Schumacher, and their children, Erica, Andrew and Erin of Fountain Hills, Arizona; Darla Deines-Hollis and Robbie Verbeek, and Darla's children, Darrica and David Hollis of Omaha; and Danette and Shane Norris and their child, Brody of Longwood, Florida. John is also survived by his sister, Carol and Jim Neessen; sisters-in-law, Judy Deines, Fontell Deines, Marjorie Enabnit, Marilyn Watson, Melinda and Dennis McWilliams; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe and Don Deines.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to The Lutheran Student Center at the University of Northern Iowa. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.StevensMemorialChapel.
