Joann Marilyn Sesker was born October 13, 1929 to Henry and Ruth (Espeland) Lilland near Gilbert, Iowa. At age 3, the family moved to Slater. Joann was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She graduated from Slater High School and on July 25, 1948, she married her husband of 65 years, Caroll Sesker, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She was a member of the SAHA and a 66 year member of the Slater American Legion. She enjoyed reading, visiting with family and friends and spending time with children and grandchildren.
Joann passed away November 5, 2013 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines at 84 years of age.
Joann is survived by her husband, Caroll; three daughters, Carolyn Sesker of Ames, Connie Sesker of Boone and Cathy (Steve) Lewis of Polk City; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Luke) Weigel of Boone, Aaron Sesker of Fort Hood, Texas, Carrie Sesker of North Glenn, Colorado and Mason Lewis of Polk City; three great-grandchildren, Meagan, Lane and Christopher Weigel; and her brother, David (Barb) Lilland. They also raised two nieces, Jo Ellen (Sesker) Brown of New Orleans, Louisiana and Karla Sesker (deceased). She also leaves behind many other relatives and close friends, including her lifelong, childhood friend, Phyllis Newman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lester and Robert Lilland; and her sister, Herma.
Memorials may be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Slater Library or the Slater Area Historical Association (SAHA).
