Betty Marie Christensen was born April 25, 1921 to Nels and Verna (Johnson) Christensen in Napier, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in rural Story County where she attended North Grant School through the tenth grade. Betty then attended and graduated from Ames High School. Betty enrolled in classes at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines and then worked for nine years as a cashier in the Treasurer’s Office at Grinnell College. Betty returned to Ames and worked at the Ames Theater Company as secretary to Joe Gerbracht. She then worked nineteen years as a legal secretary at Smedal and Maurer Law Office, retiring in 1982. Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ames, the Ames Business and Professionals Women’s Club and the Ames Soroptimist Club where she was recognized as a 50-year member. She also volunteered for many years in the gift shop at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Betty loved traveling with her family and the time spent at the family lake home in Minnesota. She was a lifelong Iowa State University football and basketball fan and attended home games for as long as she was able. In later years, she was a resident at Rolling Green Village in Nevada where she continued to lead an active life. She kept up regular communication with her extended family and served as the hub of an active family information network.
Betty passed away October 17, 2013 at 92 years of age.
Betty is survived by her sister, Mary Lou (John) Nissly; her brother, Andrew (Carmen) Christensen; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura and William Dailey and Amanda and Frederick Brosius.
