Arleen Marie Lund was born on September 15, 1924. The third of five children born to Robert G. and Viola (Stark) Kalseim, she was raised on the family farm in southern Hamilton County. She attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Story City High School in 1941.
On March 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Sterling E. Lund at her parent’s home. Arleen and Sterling made their home on a farm just northwest of Jewell until 1958 when they moved to the O. C. Lund family farm southwest of Jewell. They resided there until 2005 when they moved to Timberland Village in Story City. Sterling passed away on January 13, 2008.
Arleen did bookkeeping and secretarial work at various businesses, the last being Conaway Implement in Jewell where she worked for 12 years, retiring in 1987. Arleen was a long-time member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell where she was active in the Bethesda Lutheran Church Women’s group. Arleen also volunteered her time as a leader of the Randall Rosebuds 4-H Club for several years.
In the last days of her life, Arleen stated that her purpose here on earth was to “take care of her family”, which she did with great compassion and love.
Arleen passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Story City. She was 89 years old.
Those left to cherish her memory are: her son, Eudene (Susan Danks) Lund of Jewell; her daughter, Mary (Doug) Mechaelsen of Story City; three grandchildren, Melissa Hall and Chase Mechaelsen both of Story City and Grant Mechaelsen of Fort Stewart, GA; sister, Alverta Larrison of McKinleyville, CA; sister-in-law, Florence Kalseim of Story City; brother-in-law, Luther (Pauline) Lund of Jewell and many nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Sterling; sisters and brothers-in-law, Berniece (Harlan) Nibe and Marilyn (Norman) Farnsworth; a brother, Robert V. Kalseim and brother and sister-in-law, Arthur (Esther Oppedal) Lund.
Memorial gifts may be designated to Bethany Life Communities in Story City or Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.
