"Bert" Kenneth Bertrum Amlund, 99, passed away August 2, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Memorial services for Bert will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Story City Municipal Cemetery.
K. Bertrum Amlund was born to Gudmund H. and Julia (Mathre) Amlund on December 1, 1913 in Story City, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church.
He attended school in Story City and graduated in the class of 1931. While attending school he was active in music and athletics.
After graduation he began working in Story City as an electrician, both with his father and also for the Story City Electric Department.
On May 17, 1941, Bert and Lorraine Roe of Kelly, IA were married in the farm home of the bride. On September 17, 1941 he was drafted into the US Army serving the USA and also in the southwest Pacific theatre. After active duty, he enlisted in the US Army Reserve where he served until retirement on September 17, 1962. He retired as a Sergeant Major of the 103rd (Cactus Patch) Division Artillery with the rank of Master Sergeant.
After active duty, he began working at John Deere Des Moines Works, Ankeny, Iowa as an electrician and retired there after 28 years. He and Lorraine had made their home near Huxley until they purchased a home in Mountain Home, Arkansas in 1980. They lived there until Lorraine passed away in June of 1994. He returned to Story City in the fall of 1998 and had made his home here until his death.
In the time he and Lorraine lived in Huxley, they had been active members of Palestine Lutheran Church, where he served on both church boards and had directed the church choir for 14 years. While they were in Mountain Home, Arkansas, they had worked to establish and ELCA congregation and he had directed the new church choir for seven years.
On May 17, 1991, he and Lorraine had celebrated their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary. Lorraine passed away shortly after their 53rd wedding anniversary.
He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #3246 of Mountain Home, Arkansas and lifetime member of the American Legion Post #59 of Story City. He was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Story City, Iowa.
At Bethany Manor, he enjoyed his visits with his friends and relatives and his best buddy “Angel” the dog.
He is survived by his two cousins: Margaret Peter and Les Mathre of Story City. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Leota and Ruth and his wife Lorraine.
