Casper "Cap" Thomas Estrem was born February 5, 1919 to Howard S. and Lydia (Rimathe) Estrem in Slater. He served in the United States Army, 34th Division during WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart. Cap and Imogene Brazelton were married April 23, 1944. He was employed by the Slater Creamery and then Iowa State University as a maintenance mechanic. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Slater American Legion. Cap liked to tinker with clocks and cars, collect antiques and attend Iowa State athletic events. Cap and Imogene moved from Slater to Ames in 1979.
Cap passed away July 7, 2013 at Rolling Green Village in Nevada at 94 years of age.
He is survived by his wife, Imogene Estrem of Ames; two daughters, Shelley (Marc) Lott of Ames and Sharman (Steve McCann) Niss of Des Moines; his daughter-in-law, Ardy (Bruce) Hinds of Ames; two sisters, Hazel Houge and Lucille Accola, both of Ames; seven grandchildren, Lynn Estrem of Des Moines, Mark (Tina) Estrem of Slater, Kurt (April) Estrem of Slater, Shannon (Travis) Sayer of Clear Lake, Ryan (Holly) Lott of Ames, Mike (Brandi) Niss of Des Moines, and Jason (Gwen) Niss of Des Moines; and seven great-grandchildren.
Cap was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bill Estrem; and his sister, Rachel Lowman.
A memorial has been established in his name. Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater is assisting the family with arrangements.
