Chester O. Hougen

Chester O. Hougen, 74, passed away at his home, 107 Perkins Street, Leesburg, Florida, on Thursday, March 25. He was native of Iowa born at McCallsburg, April 10, 1907, the son of the late Ole C. and Carrie (Malmin) Hougen.

He graduated from McCallsburg High School and the University of Iowa Law School. He practiced law in Story City and Nevada before moving to Hampton, where he owned an appliance store. Later he moved to Waterloo where he owned the St. Charles Kitchens franchise.

He was elected State Representative from Black Hawk County, and then state Senator, and served in these capacities for eight years. He then was appointed Chief of the Iowa State Inheritance Tax Division. he retired from this position and moved to Leesburg, Florica in 1973.

Chester was married to Louise Montgomery of Stuart and Des Moines in 1929. They had one son, Howard Montgomery (Monty) Hougen, who now resides in Alexandria, Virginia. Louise preceded him in death in May 1970. He married Hazel Cox of Des Moines in May 1973.

In addition to his wife Hazel and son Monty, survivors are two step-daughters, Mrs. Carla Salmon, Appleton, Wisconsin and Mrs. Joan Sherman, New York City, New York; four grandchildren; one brother, Kermit L. Hougen, Radcliffe; and three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Thorson, Hays, Kansas, Mrs. Hazel Phillips, Story City, and Mrs. Vivian Wallach, Fort Worth, Texas. Three brothers, Jeffrey, Maurice and Harold Hougen preceded him in death.

Services were held at Beyers Funeral Home, Leesburg, on March 29, with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery, West Des Moines. Memorials may be made to Harry-Anna Crippled Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 49, Umatilla, Florida 32784.
