DeAnn Kay Stephens
September 7, 1939 - June 23, 2013DeAnn Kay Stephens passed away peacefully in her home at age 73 on Sunday, June 23, 2013 surrounded by her children and sister-in-law Rosalie Nelson. Funeral services are at 1:30pm, Friday, June 28, 2013 at Memorial Lutheran Church 701 11th Street in Nevada, IA. Visitation is Thursday, June 27 from 4-6pm at Memorial Lutheran Church.
DeAnn was born September 7, 1939 to Thelmer and Arlie Swenson in Story City, IA. She attended Country School near Radcliffe, IA and graduated from Radcliffe High in 1957. On September 14, 1957 she married Roger Stephens and they lived in Ames, IA. She worked for Iowa State in Beardshear Hall and enjoyed being a life-long learner including attending DMACC. In 1961, Roger and DeAnn purchased a farm outside Nevada where they proudly raised their children: John, Joan, Julie and James. In 1974, they personally built a new home on the property.
Since 2005, DeAnn was a volunteer at the front desk of Mary Greeley Medical Center where she greatly enjoyed welcoming and consoling patients and visitors. DeAnn also worked at the Glass Peacock Boutique in Nevada during the mid-80s.
DeAnn was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada and taught Sunday and Bible School. She was a Stephen Minister, member of the Mary Circle and treasurer of AAL (Thrivent). Her faith in God was an inspiration to all. Additionally, she was a 4-H leader for the Nevada Peppy Pals, a member of the Dar Ce Don Dance Club, ODO Neighborhood Club, PEO and bowled in a league for the "Country Gals."DeAnn is survived by the following loved ones: son John and wife Julia of State Center, IA; daughter Joan Reeves of Sheridan, WY; daughter Julie and husband Michael Watson of Omaha, NE; and son USAF Major (sel) James and wife Kimberly of Ames, IA. Grandchildren Jacob, Johanna, Paul and Jesse Stephens and step-grandchildren Benjamin and Christina Watson of Omaha, NE; brother DeVon and wife Dianne Swenson of Radcliffe, IA; and her loving companion of 10 years, Charlie Rutter.
DeAnn and Charlie met at Lake Robbins Ballroom and loved to dance. DeAnn and her family also enjoyed the companionship of Charlie's children: Cindy, Julie, Rick, Rosanne, Dan, Deb, Teri, Laurie and their families.
DeAnn was proceeded in death by her husband Roger; parents Thelmer and Arlie Swenson; and sister Elene. Memorial contributions will be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church of Nevada and Homeward Hospice of Ames.
