From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Michael R. Baker
February 20, 1950 - May 19, 2013

Michael (Mike) Reo Baker, 63, of Story City, passed away on May 19, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa after a courageous battle with liver cancer.

Mike was born on February 20, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa to Harry and Viola (Gliedt) Baker. Mike grew up in Waterloo and graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1968. After high school, he attended Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Mike had many skills and talents as a mechanic and carpenter. He worked several years with his brother, Bob, as a semi-driver and truck repairman. When it came to repairing or fixing things, no job was too small and Mike always accepted the challenge until he achieved perfection. His skills in the construction industry enabled him to become a construction supervisor over several thousand volunteers from 2007-2009 in Biloxi Mississippi, in rebuilding homes after Hurricane Katrina. After that, he moved to Story City where he was currently working with his brother, Mark, in the construction business in Ames and surrounding communities. He enjoyed working with his nephews and passing on his skills and knowledge of the trades.

He enjoyed fishing, camping boating and helping anyone with projects they were working on. In his earlier years, he created several oil paintings. Mike could be considered a master gardener and had a vast knowledge of tree and shrub care. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed researching a subject whether it was refurbishing a computer, the mechanics of a certain boat engine or how to properly smoke fish. But the one thing he loved most was to study his well-worn Bible and the truths therein. Mike loved Christ and that was evident to anyone who spent time with him.

Mike is survived by his brothers, Robert (Beverly) Baker, Davenport, IA; and Mark (Debra) Baker; his sister, Sharon Livermore of Ames; and nine nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his family and many lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Viola Baker; and two nephews.

Mike kept the faith and finished well.
