Margaret (Sunde) Quam

Margaret Bernice (Sunde) Quam, 83, died Aug. 15, 1997, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa, where she had been a resident since June 27, 1994. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug 21 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. The graveside service and burial were held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Margaret Bernice (Sunde) Quam, daughter of Emma and Thor Sunde, was born May 20, 1914 in Ellsworth Township, Emmet County, Iowa. Margaret was baptized by Pastor T.J. Severtson and confirmed by Pastor Torbjorn Hanson on July 29, 1928. After graduating from Estherville High School on June 1, 1932, Margaret worked at Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Estherville before moving to Milford, Iowa to work in the bank.

On May 10 1944, Margaret married Pastor Ernest Quam of Story City. The couple served parishes in Spicer, Minnesota; Graettinger, Iowa; Iola and Chetek, Wisconsin; and Thor, Iowa. After Ernest's illness and retirement, they moved to Story City. Margaret was then employed at the Story City Memorial Hospital, until she retired and moved to West Union, Iowa on July 26, 1982.

Margaret is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dan Burkhart of West Union; grandson and wife, Tim and Michelle Burkhart of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter and fiance, Kara Burkhart and Jim Hanson of Waterloo, sister, Evelyn Johnson of Scandia, Minnesota; brother and sister-in-law, Archie and Lois Sunde of Estherville; sister-in-law Lyla and husband Gaylord Hauge of Jewell; brother-in-laws Delbert Quam and wife Darlene of Story City, and Arden Quam and wife Judy of Ames; sister-in-law, Bonnie Quam of Ames; eight nieces and eight nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and stepfather, Nels Walen.
