STORY CITY BROTHERS IN BELMOND FIRE

VICTIM OF FIRE WAS MEMBER OF PIONEER FAMILY OF THE COUNTY

Story City, April 2.--The body of William Grandrup, former Story City man, sho lost his life in a fire at Belmond Friday, was interred in teh Story City cemetery Sunday, after funeral services held at the Arthur Gandrup home during the afternoon.

Emil Grandrup, the brother who was so seriously injured in the same fire, is in a hospital at Belmond, where he is said to be recovering from the injuries which were feared for a time might prove fatal.

The Gandrup brothers were members of a pioneer family of Story City. Emil, the injured man, is the eldest son of the family and William is the youngest. Both were single men and had but recently moved to Belmond from Clarion.

They were rooming on the second floor of one of buildings that were destroyed in the disastrous fire at Belmond Friday morning. When they awoke they were in immediate danger. Emil, the elder, made a futile attempt to awake and get his brother who weighed over 300 pounds, out of the danger, but was unable to do so. Fighting until he was driven from the place by flames, Emil leaped from a window of the building and received serious injuries, including broken limbs and it was feared that he was internally injured.

He was rushed to the hospital and as soon as possible the burned and charred remains of the unfortunate younger brother was rescued from the embers of the building and prepared for burial.

The body of William, a man weighing 300 pounds in life, was badly burned and charred and but a small portion was gathered up to represent the remains of the man.

One brother, Arthur, is still in Story City and conducts the old Gandrup drug store, a business established by his father and one of the pioneer business houses of Story City. A sister, Miss Amelia Gandrup, lives in Story City also.
