Mrs. Ballard Dies in Oregon

One of the Portland, Oregon, papers contains the following brief mention of the death of Mrs. Mary A. Ballard whose death occurred Sept. 19, 1916 at the home of her daughter in the city above named. "She was born in Michigan, Dec. 20, 1836. She came to Yakima, state of Washington in 1881 and in 1886 she and her husband D. P. Ballard, moved to Vancoover, where he practiced law. Mrs. Ballard was a member of the first woman's club to be organized on the Pacific coast at Olympia, Wash. During the last ten years of her life she was a resident of Portland. Three daughters survive her - Mrs. Ella A. Burch of Portland, Mrs. Mattie Johnson of Santa Cruz, California, and Mrs. W. L. Swick of Idaho." Mrs. Ballard was a resident of Story county from 1858 to 1881, a part of the time in Nevada and part of the time in the little hamlet of Bloomington two or three miles from Ames. She was a sister-in-law of Mesdames H. F. Ferguson and Harry Boyes of this city, and will be kindly remembered by many of the early settlers of the county who still abide with us.
